Modern society has in many ways made us feel independent, that we do not have to rely on God. Science, the economy, modern medicine, government, parents take pretty good care of us. Bible scholars point out to us that the Egyptians worshipped many gods. Each of the plagues represents an attack on one of the Egyptian gods. The Egyptians worshipped, made temples and sacrifices to these gods to earn their favor. But Moses demonstrates that there is only one Supreme God, and that God is on the side of the children of Israel, and the Egyptian gods fail the Egyptians. Similarly we need torecognize that God is the only God. God is more powerful than science, government, medicine. We should place or trust in confidence in God alone.
Right after 9/11 and the destruction of World Trade Towers, people flocked to church. Prayer meetings flourished. We were confused, distressed, and sought God for wisdom, strength. But after a few months, things settled down and people went back to their own routines. Now the economy is in trouble, people have lost jobs, homes, retirements. Will we turn to God or the government?
