Why did they rebel? The answer is that they rebelled for the same reasons we rebel against God. Which is why reading the Bible has value. Even though the details of life, the particular circumstances in Exodus 32 are markedly different than our lives, human nature has remained basically the same and our relationship with God is basically the same.
Theologians tell us that we all are subject to, have inherited "Original sin" which makes the possibility of rebellion a very real force in our lives. all of us have a great potential to rebel. For most of us it is something that comes very easy, even natural to us. I find that often disobedience is often very easy, obedience is often very difficult.
The triggering event in this case was their impatience, their fear, their lack of understanding about who God is, their lack of trust, and a desire to do things their own way. When all of these tendencies confronted that strange scene where Moses disappears, there is lightening, thunder, earthquakes, dense clouds, no knows what is going on and what will happen, causes them to break their promises to God. I too am impatient, often give into my fears and anxieties. Often God seems very far away. I have a very strong built in reflex to want to do things my way. The result is always separation from God and God's ways.
